Seagull S6: Underrated Gem for All Genres

Seagull Original S6 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Demo

Canadian manufacturer Seagull offers some of the best guitars that money can buy. You can’t expect anything less from a brand that’s a subsidiary of Godin. In particular, their S6 is a pretty attractive model.

What’s interesting about it is the combination of tonewoods. And this is somewhat important for this topic. The soundboard is cedar. Meanwhile, we have cherry back and sides.

Cedar is slightly softer-sounding compared to the more widespread spruce. Cherry, however, is not as dark as mahogany, which is more common for back and sides.

This combo brings a pretty balanced tone. But there’s still some clarity with the high-ends in there. In my opinion, this makes Seagull S6 a pretty versatile guitar.

Another awesome thing about the guitar is its compound curved top. This isn’t that typical for acoustic guitars. But it brings improved structural integrity, as well as stronger projection.

Other than that, we have a maple neck and rosewood fretboard. The semi-gloss finish makes the neck feel great. In my opinion, it’s better than regular glossy options.

The headstock is the classic Seagull one. Although it looks weird, it helps with the tuning stability.

Best Strings for Seagull S6

To anyone who came here looking for a simple answer, I have bad news for you. There aren’t specific strings that will magically make this guitar model shine. The same goes for pretty much any guitar model.

In all honesty, the question itself is flawed. What you need to be asking instead is what kind of tone you’re looking for.

Now, this may be an unpopular opinion. You have plenty of discussions online where people wonder what works the best with the cedar and cherry combo. My simple answer is whatever works for you.

Don’t start obsessing about the combination of tonewoods and string materials. There are so many factors that impact the tone. You’ll just end up going down a rabbit hole and won’t find your way out.

This doesn’t mean that you should disregard the combination of tonewoods and strings. Just bear in mind that there aren’t the best strings for a certain guitar model. As it goes with any acoustic guitar, try as many string sets as you can. And stick to what works for you. It’s as simple as that.

Strings That I Would Recommend

All that said, I can share a few string sets. In my opinion, these string sets below can work pretty well on a guitar like Seagull S6.

I’ve chosen three different sets. One is bright, one of them is neutral, and one is softer-sounding. Since Seagull S6 is mostly neutral and balanced, I thought that this approach would be the most useful one. Strings can help you steer the tone into a direction that you want.

Elixir Acoustic Phosphor Bronze Nanoweb Coating

If you ask the internet, phosphor bronze strings are the best for Seagull S6 guitars. And I can understand why that’s the case since they’re fairly neutral-sounding. They keep the guitar’s character and full tone.

In particular, I’d like to feature Elixir Phosphor Bronze with Nanoweb coating here. Firstly, these strings stay fresh for a very long time. Additionally, they are fairly durable.

And, most importantly, they sound so full. From my experience, Elixir is great for any instrument. This particular set would be great for Seagull S6 due to its flatter response. They’ll let the instrument’s features shine. So you might notice just a slight boost to the high-ends.

The only downside here is their price. But if you ask me, Elixir strings are more than worth it.

Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze

Of course, Ernie Ball has a rich arsenal of acoustic guitar strings. One of the sets that I love is Aluminum Bronze. In particular, these strings will make you sound as brilliant and as clear as it gets.

The foundation of these strings is the maraging steel core. The wrapping on wound strings is aluminum bronze. These materials are what make the set so bright sounding.

Nonetheless, they also have fairly decent bottom-ends. You’ll get just a slightly scooped sound with them.

Additionally, these strings come with corrosion-resistant features. This makes them fairly durable in the long run and keeps the tone fresh.

This also isn’t the cheapest set around. But again, strings that last longer are worth it.

Ernie Ball Earthwood Silk & Steel

Another mention of Ernie Ball, their Silk & Steel line is a unique hybrid blend. The hex-shaped core has an 80/20 bronze wrapping. But in between is a layer of silk.

This adds a mellow twist to the tone. If you feel like adding a darker and smoother twist to your S6, I’d recommend this set. However, from my experience, the guitar will still retain its full character and projection.

Elixirs are awesome, aren’t they? They sound great for so long. And it sounds like you have a great instrument too if you rarely need to tune it!
